Typing speed test

Pick a length, click the passage and start typing: the clock starts with your first key. Every word is checked as you go.

Length
The first bend of a running track is where many races are decided. Runners in the outside lanes start further ahead because their lane is longer around the curve, so the staggered start lines make every lane the same distance to the finish.

Press Esc to restart. Copying and pasting are switched off for the test.

How it is scored

A typing-test word is five keystrokes, spaces included, so your speed does not depend on how long the words in a passage happen to be. WPM counts the correct letters still in your text plus the spaces between words, divided by five, per minute. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, including mistakes you later fixed, so the gap between the two shows how much speed your errors cost. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were right when you pressed them: backspacing repairs the text but not the accuracy.

A space always moves you on to the next word. Wrong letters turn red, letters you skip are underlined as missed and extra letters are struck through, so one slip only affects its own word. When the time is up, the words you got wrong are listed beside the results.

Getting faster

Look a word or two ahead of the one you are typing, keep your fingers on the home row, and ease off slightly if accuracy drops below about 95%: fixing mistakes costs more time than typing steadily. Use the same length each time so your results compare fairly. The passages are written for this site and mix short sentences, numbers and punctuation, and each test joins several of them in a random order.

Questions

Why is my WPM lower than my raw WPM?

Raw WPM counts every key you pressed, including wrong letters and ones you deleted. WPM only counts the correct letters left in your text, so the difference is the speed lost to mistakes.

Do capitals and punctuation count?

Yes. Each character has to match exactly, including capital letters, commas and full stops, just as in real writing.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes: tap the passage to bring up the keyboard. Turn off autocorrect if it changes your words, and expect lower scores than on a physical keyboard.
