# Reaction time test

Wait for the pad to turn green, then click, tap or press Space as fast as you can. Five tries make a round. Go before green and it is a false start.

## How the timing works

When you start a try, the page waits a random 2 to 5 seconds, so you cannot learn the rhythm. It then turns the pad green in the next animation frame and notes the time with `performance.now()`, the browser's high-resolution clock. Your click, tap or key press carries a timestamp from the same clock, and the difference is your reaction time. Press while the pad still says Set and it is a false start: that try runs again and does not count.

A press less than 100 ms after green is also a false start. That is the line World Athletics draws for sprint starts: nobody genuinely reacts that fast, so a quicker response was a guess that happened to land after the signal.

## What your score includes

Every on-screen test measures more than your eyes, brain and finger. After the page draws green, your display needs time to show it: one refresh lasts about 17 ms at 60 Hz and 7 ms at 144 Hz, and many screens add processing delay on top. Your mouse, keyboard or touchscreen then takes a few milliseconds more to report the press, and wireless devices can add more again. Treat the result as you plus your setup, and compare scores on the same device.

## What is a good reaction time?

As a rough guide, many people average somewhere around 200 to 300 ms on browser tests like this one. Laboratory studies, with equipment designed to remove device delays, have long put the average simple reaction time to a light at about 190 ms for college-age adults, with reactions to a sound a little faster. Tiredness, distraction and age all slow reactions, and every try varies, which is why the test averages five.

This is a game and a practice tool, not a medical, cognitive or driving assessment.

## Questions

**Why did I get a false start when I waited for green?**

A press less than 100 ms after green counts as a false start, because nobody reacts that fast: the press was already on its way. The wait before green is random, between 2 and 5 seconds, so react to the colour change rather than the rhythm.

**Will I get the same score on every device?**

No. Display and input delays are part of every on-screen result, and they differ between screens, mice, keyboards and touchscreens. A fast monitor and a wired mouse can take tens of milliseconds off a phone's score, so compare like with like.

**Can I use the keyboard?**

Yes. The pad keeps keyboard focus during a round, so press Space or Enter when it turns green. Different inputs have different delays, so stick with one when you compare scores.

**Does it work if I am colour-blind?**

Yes. The go screen is a much brighter green than the red waiting screen, and the words change from Set to Go at the same moment, so you can react to the brightness or the text instead of the colour.

**Where is my best average kept?**

Only in your browser's local storage on this device. It is never sent anywhere, and Clear best removes it.
